Proposals for a Scribe (2009)

aceartinc, Winnipeg

Curated by Kegan McFadden; turn-around series programmed by hannah_g.

This counter-publishing performance borrowed the words Herman Melville attributed to his character Bartleby, who refuses to copy the law by repeating the phrase “I would prefer not to.” From the perspective of the reluctant or depressed scribe or secretary, the work engaged themes of bureaucracy, labour, madness, relationality, refusal, and gender with a sense of vernacular absurdity.
